Blogmas Day 4
1. A New Vision of Beauty
Dumplin’ offers a new vision when it comes to beauty pageants. It tells the story of Willowdean, a plus-size teenager who signs up for the Texas pageant that her beauty-queen mother (Jennifer Aniston) won in the Nineties. She initially enters just as a protest of her mother, but her entry encourages other hopefuls – previously dissuaded by the image-consciousness of the institution – to compete.
It’s a beautiful story.
2. Dolly Parton
So many Dolly references, and an amazing soundtrack. It features old and new music by the country legend. Dolly ties into the whole movie, and it graciously brings it all together.
3. Female Friendship
All of the relationships in this movie, and the best ones circle around female friendships. The relationship between Willowdean and her best friend Ellen is heartwarming, complicated and real.
Likewise Willowdean’s relationships with her misfit schoolmates, her loveable aunt and her tricky mother are all genuine and empathetic.
4. Jennifer Aniston & her Texan Accent
JA nails the pageant mom character, but brings even more to it than you would think. Her accent is hilarious, and right on target.
