Hi yall @kallmekn here. I am a local Cincy newbie fitness blogger and I am so excited to do this collab on Layla Living! I am a national competitor in weightlifting. Weightlifting consists of the only 2 lifting movements in the Olympics, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Who named those? Seriously?
I have been weightlifting for almost 4 years now and I have completely fallen in love with it. I am a huge component of fitness in general and finding what you love to do to get your body moving, whether it be weightlifting, yoga, running, crossfit, Zumba, basketball, etc. But if you happen to be curious about weightlifting, I am here to guide you to the best places in the Cincinnati area to learn and get involved in the sport of weightlifting.
Lion’s Pride Weightlighting
1213 York St, Cincinnati, OH 45214
Obviously, I have to start with my current gym! I recently just found LPW and I am so grateful for this gym and the people in it. LPW is a wellness center that offers not only weightlifting, but functional fitness, HIIT, personal training, recovery & nutrition, and soon boxing.
It is located close to OTR on York street in the basement of an old building, in weightlifting fashion. With 14,500 square feet of training space you have plenty of room to do all the fitness.
Owner and head coach David Fairbanks is a welcoming face when you walk into the door. He brings laughter into the gym while teaching the ques you need to know, making you feel comfortable doing the uncomfortable.
Come join the Pack at LPW!
Cincinnati Weightlifting Club
753 Reading Rd Suite C, Mason, OH 45040
Cincinnati Weightlifting is one of the oldest weightlifting clubs in Cincinnati and they are still thriving. Head coach Keith Connolly is a welcoming and big supporter of community in weightlifting and he is also a national competitor and Ohio state record holder himself. Cincinnati weightlifting offers community days where people from different barbell clubs or people wanting to learn about weightlifting can come to their gym and learn and lift for free!
513 Barbell
5210 Wooster Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45226
513 Barbell is powered by J2FiT, originally a New York City business. Founder Mike Dewar expanded online nationally, and now physically in Cincinnati. Mike is very knowledgeable in the sport of weightlifting and fitness in general. He has published over 500 articles on big name weightlifting sites such as BarBend, Breaking Muscle, and more.
I have full confidence that Mike can take a beginner off the street and help them become a national level lifting, wait he’s already done it!
Set Fire Athletics
15 W 6th St., Newport, KY 41071
Located just across the river in Newport, Set Fire is one of the newest weightlifting gyms around. Even though they are new, they are hardworking and hungry to set fire to the weightlifting world.
They are located in New Cov crossfit and offer a specific coached program. The facility itself also offers crossfit, boxing bootcamp, fitcamp, kids crossfit, and even offer babysitting!
KW Crossfit
Redna Terrace, Cincinnati, OH 45215
Obviously, gotta throw in my own coaching in here! KW Crossfit offers a once a week weightlifting class on Saturday’s from 11am-12pm taught by yours truly! Here we can work through beginners to advanced in a scalable program. We focus on breaking down the movement and really hitting those correct positions before putting on more weight. It is a great class for beginners.
KW crossfit is located in Glendale in a loading dock, in crossfit fashion. Aside from my weightlifting class they also offer crossfit, conditioning, kids, and nutrition.
BONUS CLUB
Mangold Weightlifting
630 Watervliet Ave, Dayton, OH 45420
For those a little more north, Mangold Weightlifting is in Dayton and is ran and coached by 2012 London Olympian and my first weightlifting coach Holley Mangold. Holley Mangold has years of experience in the weightlifting world. She has since switched her focus to coaching and opened a gym in Dayton last year. Holley is a fresh taste to the sport, filling her gym with a knowledgeable, light, fun, and sometimes (okay a lot of times) sarcastic atmosphere.
Holley got me my start in weightlifting and I would recommend her to anyone I know! If you are close enough go check out Mangold Weightlifting.
I hope this has helped you if you are looking for a new weightlifting club in Cincy, or if you are curious about the sport of weightlifting. As always, you can always reach out to me, @kallmekn, about any specific questions about weightlifting. I even offer online programming as well!
